About My Vocal Lessons

My lessons will give you a clear method, based in science, to improve your singing in any style.

Every lesson is tailored to you and meets you where you are.

My Students

I work with singers of all levels in contemporary styles such as Rock, Pop, Gospel, Jazz, Country and R&B. I’m excited to work with anyone wanting to develop their singing skills. I welcome you if you’ve never sung before, or if you’re a pro going in the studio to work on recording an album.

I accept students ages 14 and higher.

What We’ll Do in Lessons

At the first lesson, we will set the stage for all future lessons by teaching you about basic vocal mechanics and guiding you through exercises to isolate the two main registers of your voice: chest register and head register/falsetto.

Each lesson consists of a brief stretch and general warm-up/diagnostic period. This helps me hear what’s happening with your voice and decide how to focus the lesson.

The warm-up is followed by voice exercises designed to give your voice what it needs at any given time. For example, if I hear that your falsetto/head register is sounding challenging, we can focus time getting it to move more freely and feel more comfortable using mobility and relaxation exercises. Then we would work on the middle pitch range of your voice to ensure that chest register and falsetto/head register are balanced and the transition between them is smooth and comfortable.

Once the voice is balanced and consistent from low notes to high notes without any breaks, we can work on more specific goals such as more power on high notes, belting, riff and runs, beautiful tone or your most desired vocal trait.

After warming up and singing exercises, we can work on songs that we choose together or you choose. If there is material for an audition or for school or church, we can sing that.

I always enjoy working on original material if you write songs.

Recorded Lessons

I recommend that you record the video of each lesson for practice and review between lessons. Additionally, as you grow you will hear your progress on your recordings.

Lesson Materials

You will need a desktop computer or laptop and optionally headphones or earbuds each week. Have a bottle or glass of water handy. Optional props if available: a reusable metal or hard plastic straw and a cork (wine-sized or smaller lab corks all work).

Vocal Progress

Over time we will develop balance and coordination between your vocal registers, strength, and eventually stamina in your singing voice.

I strive to lead you to a healthy voice that feels better, sounds better, and in some ways is less mysterious, although the beauty and power of singing will always hold mystery. The goal is you—only stronger, better, freer and easier.

I look forward to working with you!
